Time to Focus in 2020
Parent focus groups will be held this month to collect data that we can use to help us continuously improve in all aspects of SGGS. Please plan to attend one of the sessions. You only need to attend one session and they will last about one hour. This process is being conducted by an outside resource and will be in room 106 on: January 23 at 8 am & 6 pm.
STREAM Community Event
Do you work in a STEM-related career? We are inviting our community STEM experts to SGGS for a day of fun during Catholic Schools Week! On January 27 from 11:30-2:30pm, we will host an exciting, hands-on event where our students will be exposed to STREAM (science, technology, religion, art and math) concepts as applied in real-life careers. If you are interested in hosting a hands-on demonstration at a table for students to learn more about your field/company/skills, please contact Christen Dodd at
We want to expose our Saints in grades K-8 to the excitement of a career in a STREAM-related field and encourage them to pursue further education in these areas of study. Due to limited space, we will include about 25 demonstration tables and only a few slots remain!
SGGS Night at ODU
- Join us on January 25th at 7pm as the ODU Men's basketball team take on Florida Atlantic at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The SGGS Choir will be singing the National Anthem! Tickets are $25 at the door. We can't wait to see you there!

Attention Rising 7th Grade Parents: The TDAP Booster is now required for all 7th graders. Once your child turns 11, he/she should have the booster. Letters were sent home Friday to those students who have not completed or submitted their documentation of the booster. When completed, please send in the documentation addressed, “Attention Nurse”. The booster is mandatory for entry to the 7th grade.
Clinic News Keep up the handwashing Saints! It is not too late to get your flu shot. Please keep your child home if they are sick. A child must be fever free and free from vomiting or diarrhea for at least one full day before returning to school. Thanks for your help! Together we can fight the flu.
Diocese Celebrates Bicentennial - We are so excited to kick off the bicentennial year with diocesan-wide Masses this weekend.Bishop Barry C. Knestout will celebrate a special Mass to recognize the Catholic presence in the Eastern Vicariate at Sacred Heart Church, Norfolk, on Jan. 18. Uniform Guidelines Reminder
The correct outwear is the dark green sweatshirt (PE), dark green hoodie, and dark green fleece. If students are in class, these items should be worn in the event a student is cold. Spiritwear items which are purchased to support various programs and events should only be worn on announced spirit days. This includes basketball spiritwear (tshirts, sweatshirts), Fun Run t-shirts, Raffle t-shirts, etc. (even if they are green).

New Middle School Soccer Team
- An interest meeting for a new middle school soccer program will take place on Monday January 27, from 3:00-3:45 in the art room. St. Gregory the Great is looking to host a soccer team within the Eastern Tidewater Independent Schools League starting in Fall 2020. Has your child ever wanted to try lacrosse or learn more about the sport? Coastal Crush Lacrosse is offering a TRYLAX clinic in January February that is available to boys and girls ages 6-14. The clinic will be held at Cape Henry Collegiate on 26 Jan, 2 Feb and 9 Feb. Participants get a free lacrosse stick, ball, and a US Lacrosse membership. TRDance - Shapes in Motion
This Introduction to Dance program is designed to expose young students to the craft of dance. Students will gain practical understanding of dance, be able to name and demonstrate basic ballet concepts, experience rhythms as the catalyst to locomotion, and much more - all in an environment of fun and creativity! This 8-week program is being offered 3:00-4:00p on Tuesdays for 1st - 4th graders; classes begin January 28th. Scrapbooking & Card Making Club
It’s time to get creative! All 5th-8th graders are invited to join Mrs. Van Scoten after school to create their own scrapbook and/or handmade cards. Paper, tools, embellishments, etc. are provided; just bring your imagination and creativity! This 7-week club will meet Mondays from 3:00pm-4:15pm starting January 27th. The Latin Club at St. Gregory is designed to teach students in grades 5th-8th the basics of Latin grammar, translating skills and Ancient Greek and Roman Mythology. Club members will receive a workbook and snacks for every meeting. During club meetings, members will translate simple sentences, complete educational activities, make card games, board games and 3-D models. The 8 weeks will culminate in club members completing a group project or taking the Introduction National Latin Exam. The club will meet Wednesdays from 3:30pm-4:30pm starting January 29th. The SGGS Choir is looking for more students in Grades 4-8 who love to sing and would like to join the Choir starting in January! Rehearsals are held after-school on Thursdays, 2:45-3:45pm, in the Music Room. Music Performance Class
The SGGS music program offers a performance class to any student in Grades 4-8 who plays an instrument or sings and would like the opportunity to perform solo in front of people as well as gain greater confidence with that skill.
