Online Safety At SGGS we actively discuss digital citizenship. In computer class, students complete numerous lessons on what it means to be a good digital citizen and how to be safe online. These topics are also reinforced in their regular classrooms and in school-wide assemblies. Recently a viral urban legend made its way to the U.S. As the rumor and frenzy spread around this inappropriate character and content, so did the copy-cat fame seekers. We do not want to feed into the frenzy, but will remind students:

  • Don't believe everything that's online.

  • No one (or their computers) can make them (or anyone else) do something bad.

  • Immediately report any inappropriate content to an adult.

  • Bad content can appear even when working on "safe" sites (i.e. YouTube Kids).

As parents, there are many websites that can help open up the dialogue around online safety and the usage of electronic devices. Some sites (https://www.netsmartz.org/CellPhones) provide conversation starters and contracts. CommonSense Media (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/) is another great site to bookmark. Their mission is to help "kids thrive in a world of media and technology." They provide an unbiased view of apps and movies and blog about social media and online challenges (good and bad). If you have any questions about how to talk about online safety, please let us know.

Nature Club: Spring Has Sprung! Nature Club returns for the spring starting March 26 on Tuesdays for $100. Email Mrs. Martha Bradley at mbradley@sggsvb.org to sign up.

  • AdvanceEd
Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School is AdvancED accredited and the Diocese of Richmond is AdvancED accredited as a school system.

AdvancED is the largest community of education professionals in the world. They are a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. While their expertise is grounded in more than a hundred years of work in school accreditation, AdvancED is far from a typical accrediting agency. Their goal is not to certify that schools are good enough. Rather, their commitment is to help schools improve.
Combining the knowledge and expertise of a research institute, the skills of a management consulting firm and the passion of a grassroots movement for educational change, AdvancED serves as a trusted partner to 34,000 schools and school systems—employing more than four million educators and enrolling more than 20 million students—across the United States and 70 other nations.
